charge, artfully, knocks, filaments, cell, sticky,
pearls, bone, linen, air, beware, skin, call
Haggard
Beware the sticky filaments of the spiders silk
upon your skin - that artfully draped linen dress
that you plan to let fall too soon after your
picnic and the gift box of pearls...from him
that you requested to seal your secret deal?
Will you hear knocks upon your door at midnight
after the summer air has become cold enough
to chill each and every perfumed cell of your body?
Will he call, will his steed charge to your rescue?
Do you remember there is no guarantee
of the spell that uses finely crushed bone and other things
that you will add to his wine from my old matronly ring?
Will you be prepared for whatever curse his wife
might have bought from me a fortnight ago
to keep his loyalty for her - love is not the issue, is it?
Pay me more gold coins and perhaps other arrangements
can be made to keep her skin diseased...

Just going where the words took me...
this is not part of my story verse.
But who knows where it could lead?

To keep her skin diseased... that's where I see the story deepen. After I read that last line, it deepened my appreciation of the first stanza, which I read again immediately. This is good, Jules.
ReplyDeleteInteresting story - stands alone or could lead to something more???
ReplyDeleteThat first stanza is captivating, Jules, it pulls the reader in with the imagery. Nicely done.

Holy cats, girl! That ending is awesome!
ReplyDeleteA brilliant beginning to a prose poem story.
ReplyDeleteOoh, what a story you tell with this poem! It's delightful - thank you for sharing it with us. :)
ReplyDeletefirst time in my life i have read the poem story where you really have to put yourself in the imaginary situation . well written
ReplyDeleteLike it Jules. Like the ton of questions you leave unanswered with your tidbits of info crumbs...the spider in your first stanza, the danger you hint at in the second, the family relationship drawn in the third, and the secrets almost unveiled in the fourth. This is wonderful story telling,

Oh, I know where it will lead alright! ;-) There will be tears.
ReplyDeleteThe various personae are well painted, drawing us deeper into the dark message.
ReplyDeleteWow! A lot of energy in this one... complex and disturbing at times... Good job Jules. :-)
