Entwinded

with thanks to K.A.B.

Entwined
I
all roads lead to Rome...
and on the way to that pilgrimage
whether it is to fame or some other fable -
the threads of our being, from the clothes
that we wear, the emotions that tear...
and slip away to leave the naked thought
are left along the sides of the road

so we can return to where we have been
in some obscure dream filled with symbols
belonging to places we once called home
even if just for one evening to walk
in the barely lit shadowed alley ways
that belonged to some ancient place
that was never mapped, but was well traveled

II
and out of all the yarn that has been
found at yard sales or bought at charity shops
that has been knitted, crocheted or otherwise
tied together to make wearable art  for family
and friends or made into hats and blankets for
newborns or scarves for strangers...
I have never thought to imagine how many miles...

all that string would it equal -
maybe more than enough
to go to (and come back from)
all the places I might
ever have wanted to visit...

III
unraveled life threads
memories built in layers
of when we tied knots

Respectfully : November 11th.

Elfje Quint

Respectfully

service
then and
now, in war
rarely in peacetime, brave
protectors

protectors
of choices
the ability to
make, break and shake
laws

strong,
brave, true,
just, and willing
to spill blood for
freedom

laws
attempting to
guide singular vision
to global expanding populations;
people

people
some strong
some weak - still
need protecting from tyrants -
service!

One of a Kind : for Mis Q

One of a Kind

Oh, my - the best recipe I ever made
will most likely lay in wait for a repeat
as I, not a baker who must follow amounts
religiously to attain angelic perfection...
I just putter in the kitchen

The summer veggies from the co-op,
what ever was uprooted, all take a dive
after being unceremoniously peeled and
chopped; potatoes, carrots, leeks, onion,
peppers of all hues

I sometimes use just water boiled or
boxed stock or my homemade brew
to add some hearty flavor - some garlic
or red pepper flakes or if a sauce I’ll
add some nutmeg

There is one dessert though that I
do make just for traditions sake -
and though I’ve read it can be baked,
I still (the only thing I) fry are the shells
for Cannoli

As it is a time consuming endeavor
I tend to only make it every other year -
the last time I made them I even dipped
the shells in melted chocolate - and
added pistachio nuts

While the kitchen is not my favorite room
I do manage to get by - and often I will hear
from my family a wistful sigh because they
know that if they’ve eaten something good
it was most likely one of a kind

Amber Waves? for We Write Poems 179

Amber Waves?

All he wanted was a second bowl of gruel.
Depending on what part of the country you are in
it could have been rice, grits or pone

Some like it in the pot nine days old...
leftovers, two three days maybe
and that is stretching it a tad

Miss Muffet enjoy curds with her whey
most folks now just eat some form of yogurt
maybe flavored cottage cheese

Me, I’m not picky - though there are just
some foods I will not eat, guess you
have to be brought up with some foods

like octopus, snails, chicken feet or pigs ears -
Just give me simple grains ground fine
to make some homemade bread

A bunch of fresh veggies to chop in to
a fine large pot, add some spices too -
along with a small stone to tell a story

while you bring potatoes, he brings carrots
and maybe she brings some string beans -
We’ll share in a feast thankful for friends

Maybe one day there will be enough food
for everyone - no empty bellies off to bed -
All he wanted was a second bowl of gruel

It's as Plain as the Nose... A Miz Q series prompt

Change the poem’s form. (Point of View Series #5

It’s as Plain as the Nose...

mother mature has a habit
of messing up our plans
changing weather
unexpectedly
blowing
grains
of
sand
in our eyes
while we sleep
steaming our passions
yet weakening our resolve

I won’t, I won’t the cry
of a tantrum rings -
draws us back to memories
of defining wants and needs
...I went to went to the edge
It’s mine, I don’t want to share
I’ll pout all day and I won't care
if my faces freezes like this it will be your fault!
...It is always a fine balance
hormones rage, and men just want to escape
the house, their home, especially when filled with
only women. don’t kid yourself men have moods too!
...Living day to day with nature
and so it goes with the windows open wide
everyone listening to everyone elses business
and the rumors fly of who, and how
everyone forgetting the basic element of why
and yet the next day when the sunshines
who are the first to run to gossips hungry fence...
...It’s the neighbors

Fruitful

fruitful

 not
alone...
would all
 the poets
  please come
     out  of hiding
       meet at the hill
           under the silver
              banana moon and
                 dance  for joy, saying
                    nothing and being poetic
                            just the same. let them
                                    call us by colorful words
we know the unspoken truth   ___
< banana moons are tasty and >

Hot Under the Collar : for Miz Q

Change the emotional temperature.
(Point of view series 4)
Hot Under the Collar

Mother went to the edge...

I can only wonder
if she ever did stay on any
straight path long enough to reach its end
It is always a fine balance...
wanting to be friends with
yourself, your children,
thinking how spiffy and wonderful it is to
keep up with or be better than the blasted ‘Joneses’
Living day to day with nature...
whose idea was it to plow land
to reap harvests after
taking the land that
belonged to all things wild and free
And the neighbors...
what right have they to judge
how anyone else sets their table
or which foreign or domestic car is better suited
to fit into this particular slice of suburbia
it doesn't matter who has this or that
it should only matter that we actually give a damn
especially about each other, especially now!
