Traveling Through a Hue        a haibun 1.19

Returning from the black of space -
Astronauts were quarantined in a modified Airstream trailer.
Scientists wanted to make sure they didn’t
bring back any diseases like the Black Plague  -
after circling and landing on the moon.

The children who danced in circles
singing ‘Ring-around-the-Rosy
with posies in their pockets
never imagined that anyone
would be cast out into the blackness of space

Often the unknown is considered black, negative
like that shade of diseased skin, unidentified
frightening - the mystery that takes lives.
And yet some ancients revered the color -
as a gift of renewal or of a god’s protection.

Black is the absence of all light -
And was one of the first known colors
to be used in art. And graduated
to become respected by many before
becoming color of haute couture.

Though I suspect that no one
ever did wear a little black dress in
the trim and silver aluminum airstream trailers -
Whose limited space was more
for the exploration of simple relaxation.

black; goes in and out
of history and fashion -
ever circular

In 1969, upon their return from the Moon, the crewmen of Apollo 11 were quarantined in the Mobile Quarantine Facility, a modified airtight Airstream trailer, until it could be determined that there was little likelihood of their having brought back lunar pathogens with them.
Black is the color of coal, ebony and of outer space...

For the ancient Egyptians, black had very positive associations. it was the color of the rich black soil flooded by the Nile. It was the color of Anubis, the god of the underworld, who took the form of a black jackal, and offered protection against evil to the dead.

Black and white are not really colors, in the sense of having a specific hue. Black is the absence of all light, while white is the presence of every color of light. A white light bulb is really emitting tons of red, yellow, green, blue, and purple light all at the same time.

  1. It has the Twilight Zone and a circular motion feel to it, I like it, Jules.
