Effective Cost?
(a haibun)

Most of the times, these days anyway, the stroll to the rural
mailbox at the end of the drive is not all that exciting. Bills and
advertisements abound. Most of which gets recycled. Today
will be a little brighter when this morning a rebate form gets
placed in the same said box for pick up. Our utility company
will be issuing a rebate for the new water heater. And next
February come tax time Uncle Sam will also credit our taxes.
Maybe even now, every month we’ll actually see a decrease
in our utility usage with the installation of the new energy
efficient water heater.

a carbon footprint,
decreases in size; so we
would like to believe

Household?
(a haibun)

Just a little walk, a stroll from the washer to the line;
strung in the laundry room to hang dungarees...
Wait what is this, the rug beneath my feet goes:
squishy squash...no where near the washer?
Uh oh, the water heater tank...has tanked.
Switch off the breaker, turn off the water and
call the ‘Boss’ - to actively seek out a replacement!

One Yesterday
(a haibun for 9/11)

Some days are slower than others. We travel less. Perhaps it
is on those days we can visit our memories and think about
what happened five, ten or fifteen years ago. Remembering
joy is only possible when we also remember sadness.

The heavy burden of those who chose to believe that they
were doing something of value by taking away so many lives
that had nothing to do with their own internal warring.
Can everyone be persuaded to believe in and pray for peace?

grasses grow and sway;
some flowers are placed on graves -
is there peace with death?

Smitten, Bitten
(a haibun)

Good to walk when the weather is cooler.
Not in the direct heat of the day, we stroll.
Stop to chat with our neighbors - connections.
And then drawn to my arm...the mosquito -
So soon after I brushed one away from the
face of my own dear one...three times in
Silent reverie I was accosted! I look forward
to the first frost and the beginning of autumn
is still days away.

unscented, was I?
apparently I ‘drew’ more
than I bargained for

Good for my spouse to think I am sweet.
To walk hand in hand, kindly at my pace -
The humidity hung heavily, but the settling
dusk brought out more than just ‘people’.

Keyed Up
(a haibun)

There is a different world alive
when walking in the morning.
This dawn almost autumn
hanging on to summers’ skirts -
white chiffon on eggshell blue sky.

Almost oppressive even before eight.
Yet there are bugs and blooms.
And a few people watering, walking,
riding to errands or work on this Saturday...
the second to the last of this season.

peace is disturbed by
the door opening, your class -
you thought was, is not

escaping the heat
(a haibun)

A one tank wonder - an adventure on an underground
waterway in a cavern, that pokes out next to the wild
life park, where we saw buck still with velvet antlers.
And geese and duck before our return to the entrance.
So many interior rock formations allow for imagination
to run wild with speculation of what one sees; from a
lion, to Lady Liberty, the Leaning Tower of Piza and
even rock bacon!

surveillance
(a haibun)

amid the falling pre-autumn chestnut leaves swirling
in a forceful wind - perhaps the tail of distant gale
one brave yellow swallowtail unfurled, righted;
and bravely proceeded across the street
and out of sight and into a pale dawn sky

day stretches at a
constant tick or fluttering
of wings gaining way
