Memorabilia
I fingered the fire opal ring that he had given to me on my last birthday
And glanced out the study window at the sinewy branches of the willow
And mulberry trees that kept time with late spring headless tulips swaying in the wind
Seemingly bent over the stray feline whose alto mews only served to alert
The mourning doves and too the overgrown thistle was just about ready to go to seed...
I crumbled to dust some of the dried umber eucalyptus leaves,
Seeking some fragrant relief - especially after finding that sour milk in fridge
The sienna honey looked good but two thirds of it had crystallized anyway -
I wanted to vanish like a nymph, eat a juicy peach, maybe down a shot of rye
I wanted to escape to some exotic spa...my arm, my elbow ached,
My hand, fingers felt numb from shaking the hands of all his famed
Colleagues whose praise seemed like a broken record - thankful that part
Of this fine mess was over now, and I was back at his place from the services
At the funeral home and the cemetery...I remained, his only living heir
Just what was I going to do with all this stuff from his travels now?
The ivy jade rabbit lay next to the course lava that looked like tumbleweed so clearly
Marked from where he had gotten it, as was every bit of his fine worldly possessions -
What was the thought he had when he had taken it from the base of Peles’ volcano
He was the one who told me of the lore that it was bad luck to take that home as a souvenir.
Buy a ticket to Hawaii and return that lump to the goddess, I suppose I could do that -
White coconut shavings looked like veins in the onyx owl that whispered; “Who cares?”
JulesPaige/davh © (May 10, 2012)
Process notes: I was thinking of doing short verse or haiku...but as usual I let the words write themselves. And with just a tad bit of tweaking I’m satisfied. I especially like the last line...
Which I needed to adjust...thanks Anne Katherine...I was tired - it was the owl who spoke.

Silver Flow Alliance
Silver Flow Alliance
She had to use the fat covered hide upon entering and exiting her sanctuary -
Since that day she had felt feverish - slowly working her way to the back
Of the single line group migrating from cold to warm seasons’ camp
She was more than half way unnoticed already being a girl-child
Of the lowest ranking male - would it have been much better she thought
Had her birth mother a respected healer, had survived her birth?
She watched the distance grow between that last man and herself, slowly at first
He was supposed to have alerted those in the lead - but he had stepped aside
To relieve himself and honestly was not aware that she had slipped away
She slumped then sat hidden in the rising new grasses and just closed her eyes
After uncountable nights passed she knew there would be no catching up
No loss really as they seemed so primitive and primal - where had that thought come from?
She would find her own way for that she was most certain as if there were a
Guide leading her to that all gift giving substance; water
A spirit perhaps, or maybe just observing the flight of the birds...
She, still in her delirium wandered unknowingly west seemingly burning
The valley’s foliage with everyone of her heated yet impassioned arrhythmic steps
Until she heard the falls ...and became blinded with the thought of relief
She walked from the shallow edge, then deeper with every heartbeat
Pushed her way through and under the flowing wall into the secluded caverns
That would become her haven as well as her home
She soon regained her health and living daily became much easier
With the bounty of this magical place - and with all the lessons remembered
As well as those gifted by her unseen guide she grew to love her solitude
She had not notice the slipping of days or seasons that turned into years
Confidence taught her respect for all that surrounded her here - the only teacher she needed
And too the water tested the strength of the stones....

Fair or Foul Whether: a Kyrielle for Wordgathering
Fair or Foul Whether
She shed her tears, some easily
Thinking of his face, soft yet cruel
He was her Tarzan, she was Jane
Now all that was left, the repeating rain.
Now it mattered not, day or night
Grey glass reflecting her sad eyes
Lonesome lamb seeking lions’ mane
Now all that was left, the repeating rain.
Her giving heart, gave all that it could
For men now, her trust was broken
He’d left her only with disdain
Now all that was left, the repeating rain.
There underneath the willow tree
Buried deep beneath branch and root
She toiled to hid him, throat well slain
Now all that was left, the repeating rain.
After all the grief he caused
She felt that death was a kindness
They would not find trace of his stain
Now all that was left, the repeating rain.
JP/davh (May 8, 2012)
So then this is a non-traditional Kyrielle? The process was write a list of rhyming words first and treat it like a wordle. I only used 6 of the 8, with the theme of ‘rain’ as that is what my weather has been, is and will be more of the same!
Generally I’m not a forms person... but ‘She’ drug me a kicking and screaming...
Thank you, Margo!

Sea Escape (#4) for Monday Melting #16
Sea Escape?
Befriending the mastodon cook with the amygdala eyes
Served two purposes...he would not starve or be too anxious about
Living on a ship out at sea for an unknown amount of time
Porter wondered if he should change his name -
As he was presented with the page where many just signed with X’s
To record that they would get paid after they arrived at the next locale
As the latch sounded its’ final click - there would be no turning back
The briefest of thoughts fluttered through his brain as to what had been his past
He was not a cruel lad, just one who wanted more
Thankful that Mother had taught him a few basic kitchen recipes
He could in truth make a fine assistant to his new friend
And perhaps learn to read the sea and the stars too
~~~
The captain examined his list of crew, he’d lost only a few men
When the volcano of emotions erupted at this primitive town’s only watering hole
And would not allow the rook of a PortMaster to peculate his crew further
He watched as most of the old faithful crew returned up the gang plank
With a few black eyes and some cuts that might make additional scars
From his roost he looked for unfamiliar faces that might cause trouble
It appeared that Chan had found a new friend - the boy seemed able enough
After adjusting the cherry cap of his authority he nodded to his bosun
He would feign amnesia in regards to the rules and granted permission for boy to board
Trade Winds (Sunday Whirl 55)
Trade Winds
Mother woke feeling quite well, emerging from the bedclothes clear minded
“Father” she poked at her husband slightly vibrating with sleep-snoring
He rolled over and gave her a wink - he too notice the contrast in mood
As if life were no longer that grind that bore an irritating hook in his side
From their sons’ room they heard a mild whimper...that was not his normal sound
They would tend to leave the increasingly moody boy alone, but they took a chance...
They together aligned themselves to venture into that little space
To find another boy, the smudge of tear stains left a design print upon his face
His cobalt eyes almost too big for his head - Mother looked at Father
And he returned the knowing look...They smiled bending low to welcome him
The stars that dotted the night offered them another child - one who would
Perhaps appreciate the simple life they could offer...
Mother spoke, “Father please heat some water for tea I think our Johnny-boy
Might be thirsty - I’ll give his face and hands a wash and we’ll start biscuits together, aye?”
With barely a perceptible nod the boy shook his head, yes
hot food in his belly that he didn’t have to steal - ‘Fortune’ must be smiling this day
What had the older boy said...”Be honest and do your best”
How could he have left the kindness that eased from these elders?
Johnny-boy. That was a name he could live with...much better than his street name
He had yet to utter a word, took Mother’s hand, rose and let her wash his face...
WWP 104 'I wandered lonely as a cloud'
I wandered lonely as a cloud...
as if in the ether
ones and zeroes
lining, whirling, twirling, and making no sense
nonsense
until redirected into a spatial vortex
in an airless vaccum
like a breathless shadow
wanting, expecting, touch and voice
and yet there are nought of those things here
even in the bluest of skies
after a night of full rain
thunder and lightining
only those things with essence that understands such
phenomenon as rainbows - ever fleeting
like a breathless shadow
in an airless vaccum
until redirected into a spatial vortex
sense
lines, curved and straight - sentenced
zeroes and ones
the poet exists within a poem...
(Monday Melting #15) Unsavory Slavery
Unsavory Slavery
The sheep clustered in the meadow like a palaver of white knights
While lambkins searched for the mastoids of their lactating mothers
The cadre of sheep dogs keeping careful eye of their charges
Allowing me the simplicity of the clear afternoon to let my mind rove...
Thankfully I was not the one to prick my finger on the enchanted spindle
Would I ever be allowed to see or hear my beloved violist again?
I imagined a quixotic intermezzo - me educated princess, now shepherdess in disguise
Could we ever again be able to rhapsodize about our shared passion in the musical arts
Here I was hiding in plain sight from those who would bilk my father’s kingdom
My home now turned into an infernal construct without the sutures of a binding justice for all
All too quickly there seemed to be a discernible atrophy
Within the once beautiful lands that once were open to all free men
Curfews, garish armed guards posted at all of the boarders
What awful moves would that evil wizard and his lackeys impose next?
A hero is what we needed to save us from this draconian state!
Yet all I could do was make sure that mud was plastered on my face -
Rent the course wool cloth now on my skin that was once adorned in fine silks
My cut hair would eventually grow back, but for now it was best that
My golden locks appear a darker shade...I wondered how I could
Enlist the mute boy who I knew served the manic magician...
