Pretty Gritty?
mud
to young girls
nothing better to do
than keep each other company
while the grown-ups held their high tea
mud
in the back
of the yard somewhere
a place we rarely visited
the home our grandfather built to retire
mud
between our toes
we removed our shoes
and made countless dirt pies
covering our sibling selves in the afternoon
mud
they laughed heartily
once they found us
got out the garden hose
when it was time to go home
mud
of a place
now only a memory -
no longer our wonderland
lingering on the fading map of dreams

SW 70 Feathers, Flights and Foundlings (3a of A)
Feathers, Flights and Foundlings (#3a of Story Verse A -10th piece)
Once the pages of the spell book evaporated into a flock of birds,
Their limbs, gentle waves out the tower window - the binding split
And the once gilded adornment eye was now fixed in a dull stare -
The golden sheen of its eyelid had taken on a tinny hue
Was this just a prelude to eradicating the insidious evil of one wizard?
The directions which had been so clear and vivid were lost
In drifts of coherency, and while Here-boy could always have spoken
His eyesight now seemed to gift everything with a glowing tinted aura
At least the boy could tip the secret exit and escape this fix,
Even for a short time - though he preferred not to steal at all he’d go to the
Kitchen and nick some supplies before running for his life as he had
No way of knowing just how far the scales of justice had been tipped
The orchestra - they at least knew what the manic magicians’ assistant looked like
Try and find the boy - surely the lad would be startled - not know what to do having always
Been given instruction and direction, do be as gentle as you can, she instructed
The young princess had tripped and twisted her ankle on the way back to the kitchen
After seeing a strange enormous flock of birds fly over her flock of sheep -
She had been disguising herself as a shepherdess to escape the sleeping spell that
Had enveloped her elder sister and had held the rest of the royal family for ransom
The princess still with her face smudged sat with her leg propped up while Cookie
Cleaned up the foiled lunch and began anew... from the narrow back room stair
A tired looking young lad poked his head into the kitchen, spied the women and
Almost turned away, but the aroma of the fresh baked bread lured him to the table...

WWP 118: Thinking Outside of the Box
Thinking Outside of the Box
They were men with big dreams
They were the builders of things mechanical
Bolting joints, legs, sockets and circuit boards
In sealed lab rooms, perhaps climate controlled
Maybe even windowless - they followed the vision set before them
At the Grumman Iron Works in the 1960’s
They built Apollo LEM’s - one, some or all of them;
Lunar Excursion Modules - started out unmanned
And then in July 20, 1969 a man landed on the moon
Fathers, uncles, brothers, sons and grandfathers
I think the field was unintentionally mostly if not all men then
Tosterone and smoke jockeying for the light of day, during launches
And perhaps lunches too - celebrating creativity and ingenuity
Could they ever imagine that with the start of the space program
That Curiosity would land on Mars in August of 2012?
Process notes: One of my grandfathers’ helped to build several of the LEMs.
Somewhere in my home I have a line drawing or photo of one of the Apollo LEM’s
With signatures of everyone who helped to build it - including my grandfather.
This piece is to honor all those who helped the early United States space program,
about fifty years ago and since, yet only flew to space in their dreams.

SW #69 Acheron (#9 for both A & B)
#9 for both story verse A and B
Acheron
Foiled by a curvaceous body covered with lace
I narrowly escaped to my secret alcoves - only the bottom parts
Of the vast cave system by the coast ever got flooded
A safe hidey-hole for me to remain invisible...
As soon as Here-boy the mute that wasn’t, uttered the spell
To release the magic from the ancient book I so skillfully acquired
I began to warp and dwindle, my youthful image began to fade
I could see dismay and shock within the dames’ eyes...
Donning my cape to cover my appearance, almost too blind to see
By my own frustration, I consulted the maps held within my unique memory -
It seems what ever he saw he was able to keep and retrieve in his minds eye
A very good asset for a cunning wizard, he thought lifting his mood slightly
I will ricochet past this holistic recovery of the land
My world dominance shall have to wait...
I shall have to remember to be more diligent when recruiting
Mother’s for my children as well as the hired help
It might take me a few years, and perhaps I’ll rethink just how much
Of the land, sky and sea I will need to make me happy -
And so he started with simple twists of his wrist and minute flow of fingers
And in a remote sea, to test his strength - he set a whirlpool to spin...
Process notes: I knew I wanted to write about the wizard and the whirlpool,
one possible link of many that connect Story Verse A and B (turns out to be #9 for both). While looking for a name for my wizard I came upon a better title for this verse, could end up being his name too...as one definition of Acheron is; fabled name for the gates of Hell.

WWP 117 Strained? (Elfje Quintet)
An Elfje Quintet: Strained?
Patient
He, she
All of us
Under whose thoughtful care
Yours?
(Patience
Me, them
Only one rope
Burning at both ends
Ash...)
Patient
Always waiting
Another shoe drops
Naked emotions, paper gowns
Patient
(Fire
Them, me
Brilliant flames flicker
Mesmerized by the dance
Patience)
Mine?
Poked, prodded
Annoyed, yet calm
Then we get billed
Patient

Post prompt here

Process notes: I was able to cryptically apply a current situation, with perhaps some humor to this prompt. Suffice it to say that sometimes ‘you’ get what ‘you’ ask for when you are the squeaky wheel (which was not necessarily my own little self) - even if it isn’t exactly what ‘you’ wanted. Perhaps if just a little bit of patience were applied the outcome could have been different. In the end, there always is a bill to pay...
3.Archaic . a sufferer or victim.
adjective
4.bearing provocation, annoyance, misfortune, delay, hardship, pain, etc., with fortitude and calm and without complaint, anger, or the like. 5.characterized by or expressing such a quality: a patient smile.
6.quietly and steadily persevering or diligent, especially indetail or exactness: a patient worker.
7.undergoing the action of another ( opposed to agent).

SW Wordle 68 Staying Afloat
(Story verse B 8th piece)
Staying Afloat
Who ever knows what’s in store for us as we test our very marrow as lifes’ ship
From bow to stern takes an unexpected pitch from what looks like an enchanted wave,
Porter thought looking at the unfamiliar wake as he white knuckle grasped the rail
What good would the huge anchor do when the great depths seemed unfathomable
Chan saw his friend in mild distress and for a big man, gracefully did navigate
Across the great wooden deck packed with goods and sailors alike most just
Going about their business, though some newbies like Porter were afraid
The craft would sink if bombarded by the huge beasts swimming about
Coming from a sea port town Porter had spotted humpback whales
But always in the distance - never did he dream of being in the middle of a pod
…And yet the mothers’ and their calves seemed to take only brief notice
Of the humans on board... was there a link to their merfolk friends?
Porter interpreted Chan's words to say; “They are just Mothers and children
Our Captain is respectful of these gentle beasts. I believe they bring us luck”
Looking closely at the one eye of the nearest whale - Porter sensed intelligence
And wondered if there was anyone on board who could interpret their movements
The Captain had already gotten reports from his sailor in the crows nest
There was an unexplained dark spot brewing in the waters about two miles north
And the whale pod was veering west...Time to shift course and avoid that danger
Only once before had he narrowly escaped the greedy maw of a rogue whirlpool
SW 68 http://sundaywhirl.wordpress.com/2012/08/05/wordle-68/
marrow, link, store, anchor, wake, navigate, stern, deck, pitch, sink, rail, port
Process Notes: I suppose I could have come up with something not related to my story verse, but the words were meant to continue the story and the muse sees this and acts.
I also reflected some personal ‘trauma’...but symbolically hidden - which could be really how everyone writes...may we all narrowly escape the greedy maws of rogue whirlpools.
For those who would like the link to the back story ...here ye be...
They are in story order not date order.

WWP 116 She Stands by the Sea Shore
She Stands by the Sea Shore
Down along the Jersey shore route
Where the towns are only several blocks wide
Not far from Atlantic City
As the crow or perhaps the seagull flies
Is Lucy
Lucy was a restaurant, and once a home
Six stories high, but all the same quaint
Now some what of a museum
A traditional bungalow she ain’t
Is Lucy
You might wonder if there was a circus
Visiting the town of Margate
And left without all its’ animals -
Started as a gimmick for real estate...
Is Lucy
Over one hundred years old
Struck by lightning, almost torn down
Revamped and re-fitted, saved by her community,
Ninety tons of wood and steel - proud elephant,
Is Lucy
