frog adventures 5
(a haibun)

kaeru watches carefully - hiding in
the Sabbatia as the egret flies
overhead seeking lunch

hoping that a fish is more to the
liking of the great white bird
than a small humble frog

while across the road others animals
dine at tables set with plates and
clear glass drinking vessels

the shadows looking for flies
after a long hop

kaeru = in Japanese means both frog and returning.

frog adventures 4
(a haibun)

on Mondays early in the morning
traffic is heavy - and yet
kaeru ventured forth, and back

noticing new plants, insects and keeping
well away from the poison ivy growing
amid the flowering wild strawberry

within the hour out and about - before the
heat of the day rises... kaeru hopped more than
half of her ten thousand paces
*
kaeru meets up with
caterpillar, dragonfly,
and a morning moth

change up the routine
the recommendation to be creative says;
so before breakfast - hop!

also to escape the pounding mid-day sun
though there were muggy notes hanging
in the atmosphere

on the return from a minor exploration
there - the fawn stopped munching
looked up to lock a startled gaze

kaeru finds a fawn -
the tall unmown greenery;
natural curtain

from the familiar to something new
hurrying up to wait, pacing to and fro,
passing conversations with strangers

flying high above the clouds
heading north, between raindrops -
to be similar to a pilgrim

to be a stranger in a strange land,
to learn of new bodies of water
and new bends in the long road of life

*
kaeru searches for
differences, the land and
trees are similar

Something to look forward to
The space in the one hundred year floodplain
Will be planted with oats and wild flowers...

The other morning Little Miss and I
Watched some machinery flatten the grass
And grind the shafts too in preparation for seeding

Quite a bit can happen between visits -
Hopefully enough rain will fall to aide their growth
And attract multitudes of butterflies and bees

meadow; how different will
it look in two weeks?

what’s‘up?

odd what little spore may fly
for with my eye
I did spy
growing round one house plant brought
outside with the thought
for fresh air sought
several itty bitty little black fungi
also perhaps hungry,
as if beneath a tree

winging it
(a haibun)

I check on Mother Robin sometimes she is facing me -
ever protective, yet curious that I visit several times a day,
keeping my distance to her humble abode
tucked in the hedge...perhaps next week she’ll be busy
feeding those soon to hatch chicks.

the goslings have changed from little balls of walking fur to
feathered companions to their parents... usually I see them
early In the morning or sometimes at dusk, I can only guess
at where they wander during the heat of the day - perhaps
safely tucked in some of the tall grasses in the meadow?

so close my steps are
yet so very, very far
from my feathered friends
